We are excited to welcome you back to the SF State community. ​This webpage contains useful information, videos, and resources to support your transition back to SF State. 

​Many of our returning students have already attended New Student Orientation. For this reason, we do not require you to attend again. However, if you would like to attend orientation again or have questions about returning to SF State, please contact us at nsp@sfsu.edu. Our dedicated team of professional staff and peer mentors can answer your questions, connect you to campus resources, or help you connect with peer-to-peer mentoring programs -- we're here to support you.

We recognize that readmitted students may need to benefit from additional assistance to readjust to campus routines and academic expectations and navigate general student life experiences and resources. Therefore, we have curated various resources to help you ease back into university life and thrive in your academic journey.

Resources for a Successful Return

Welcome back to the SF State community! As a readmitted student, academic advising is essential to successfully transitioning back to college life. You are encouraged to talk to advisors and review advising resources to start strong as you re-enter SF State. Advisors may guide you to important resources and services available to you. 

New Student & Family Programs and the Undergraduate Advising Center are two offices collaborating to support your journey.

If you have specific questions about your academics and/or course selection, review the advising services available via the button below. 

San Francisco State has many services, resources, and programs for student success. Below are two user-friendly ways to explore and learn more about the resources available to you. 

  • Student Resource Directory: The directory provides a quick search feature to learn more about available resources that may be best suited to your needs and interests. 
  • New Student Guide: The guide is designed to be a mobile-friendly guidebook highlighting core resources for students navigating campus for the first time or after some time away. 

As a readmitted student, you have access to a peer-to-peer mentor program. The peer mentors provide essential support and guidance through your transition, finding solutions for unique challenges and referral to resources to navigate the college experience and help find a balance between personal and academic needs. 

New Student & Family Programs is home for the formal University Orientation programming. If you would like to utilize orientation resources/services or prefer to participate in orientation programming, don't hesitate to get in touch with New Student & Family Programs.

Please note: Traditional orientation programs (in-person or remote sessions) occur during June, July, and August for Fall enrollment and January for Spring enrollment. However, New Student & Family Programs will always be able to provide orientation resources and workshops to assist with your transition back to campus. 

As a returning student, you may feel pressure to "catch up" on career-related efforts to be plan for your career transition after college (e.g., internships, practicums, or general career readiness experiences). The Career Services & Leadership Development office (CSLD) is a fantastic resource for the following:

  • Free Headshots
  • Jobs on & off campus
  • Career Fairs/Workshops 
  • and so much more!

We understand that transitions can be emotionally challenging, and the college experience can be stressful. Our health, wellness, and counseling services are available to provide a safe and supportive environment for you to discuss any concerns you may have.

Please see the Registration Guide below for more information about how to find the day and time you will be registering for classes (this is referred to as your Enrollment Appointment). It is important to register early for the best course availability. We have provided resources to help refresh you on how to prep for registration, search for classes, and enroll. Click on the link to the online course schedule to begin exploring options for classes offered next semester. 

Need assistance with planning your courses? An academic advisor can assist you with planning your classes for next semester. Once you accept your admissions offer and submit your transcripts, you will receive an email that will provide you with specific details on how to access academic advising.

You can also email the advising center that supports your major.

    • When completing the survey, you should select that you are a Former SF State student
  2. The survey will give you the email address for your advising center
  3. Email the center with your name and ID number to request advising

Your Student Center is home to important information regarding your admission to SF State. Please make sure to check your Student Center often as new Holds and Alerts may populate in there. You will want to be aware and take care of new holds in order to maintain your admissions eligibility. 

All SF State students will need to set up their Two-Factor Authentication (or 2FA). 2FA is required for the SF State community for the protection of you and your information. You will need to set up your 2FA to access SF State resources and to sign up for New Student Orientation.

It is important to know when important dates and deadlines are approaching. Things such as when tuition is due, the first day of courses, or any holidays and breaks. This link will provide you with dates and details.

Checking, understanding, and accepting your Financial Aid, if awarded, is an important step to take in your transition to SF State. If you have any questions about your Financial Aid package, contact the Financial Aid Department. You can also review their website which has useful information and resources for all students and supporters.
