About New Student & Family Programs
We are the Division of Student Life
A campus community where every student belongs and the student experience matters.
The Division of Student Life (DSL) believes that every SF State student should belong and matter, has the capacity to live a purposeful life, and can positively impact the world.
To that end, the Division of Student Life (DSL) team at SF State facilitates student-centered learning through personal, professional, community, and academic engagement, culminating in a transformational experience.
Vision Statement
We envision a campus community where all students feel welcomed, supported, and valued. Our New Student and Family Programs Office is committed to creating a culture of inclusivity and belonging, where diversity is celebrated and everyone has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their goals.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for new students and their families at SF State, where they can connect with each other and the university community. Through peer mentorship, social events, and campus resources, we strive to foster a sense of belonging and empower students to engage in San Francisco State University's intellectual, social, and cultural climate.
Our Goals
- Promote academic and personal success through meaningful and intentional programming.
- Build an understanding of essential student learning systems to successfully navigate course registration, health and wellness resources, care and support, social connection, and ongoing involvement in University opportunities.
- Foster a campus community based on values of inclusion and support through peer mentorship and campus-wide social events, and offer opportunities for parents and families to build meaningful connections with their students and each other.
- Provide opportunities for students to build meaningful relationships and engage in learning through the Orientation Leader program and Gator Mentors (peer-to-peer mentoring programs).
- Ensure students know it is ok to ask for help and how to utilize the resources and services available on campus.
- Empower students to achieve personal growth and academic success, and develop social responsibility as active members of the San Francisco State community, guided by the university's values and educational mission.
- Encourage students to pursue interests beyond SF State's San Francisco campus and the greater Northern California region and provide support for their exploration and growth.
